The Lacrosse and Grenfell fires have highlighted the hazards associated with combustible cladding and other components of external wall systems. The NSW Government has announced further details of the project to facilitate the removal of high-risk combustible cladding from residential apartment buildings across the State.
Some types of wall coverings (cladding) can burn rapidly when set alight and are not permitted for use on external walls of certain multi-storey residential buildings. Put simply, combustible cladding is a material that will burn and spread flame in the event of a fire.
Cladding replacement is more complex than the usual maintenance decisions faced by owners’ corporations. Where the aluminium cladding is found to be non-compliant with the National Construction Code and/or more than just an attachment to the external wall, the experts and councils are requesting the cladding be removed.
